Old handheld scanners, trackers and modems: what stops working or updating in 2027

Android handhelds below version 7, Windows CE units and 2G or 3G modems: what loses updates or signal in 2027, what is still unknown, and a checklist.

A handheld scanner does not die on a fixed date. It loses one thing at a time. First the app updates stop, then the browser, then the security patches, and one day the network it was built for.

So the answer for 2027 is mixed.

In India, no 2G or 3G switch-off date has been announced, and I will not guess one. Old Android handhelds have already lost Google Play services, and Chrome now wants a much newer Android. Windows CE handhelds have been out of support for years. Abroad, several 2G and 3G networks are due to close in 2027, which matters if you export goods with a tracker or data logger inside the carton.

Checked on 28 October 2026. The Google and Microsoft dates come from their own pages. The foreign network dates come from tables published by IoT suppliers, so I treat them as early warnings.

Android handhelds: check the version first

On each handheld, open Settings, then About phone (on some models, About device), and note the Android version. Then compare it with three lines.

  1. Google Play services. The Google Play help page says Play services are supported only on devices with Android 7.0 and up. Android Authority reported in July 2026 that the cut-off had recently moved up from Android 6.0. Apps that depend on Play services will gradually stop updating, or stop working, on older devices.
  2. Chrome. The Chrome system requirements page lists Android 10 or later. If your warehouse or dispatch app opens in a browser on the handheld, an older device is stuck on an old Chrome.
  3. Security patches from the device maker. Google publishes the fixes, but whether your handheld receives them depends on its maker and its model. Look up your exact model number on the support page of the maker, and ask your supplier for the end date in writing.

The device does not stop scanning when these lines pass. It gets harder to keep its apps running and safe, and that is the real cost.

My own line for buying would be Android 10 or newer. Below that, even the browser has stopped moving.

Windows CE and Windows Mobile handhelds

Many older warehouse handhelds ran Windows CE or Windows Embedded Handheld. The last version of that family, Windows Embedded Compact 2013, reached the end of extended support on 10 October 2023, as per the Microsoft lifecycle page.

These units can keep doing one closed job for years. The risk is the network.

If an old handheld can join your Wi-Fi only with an older security setting, that one device sets the security level for everything else on the same network.

Put such devices on a separate Wi-Fi network that reaches only the one server they need. If that is too much trouble, I would retire them.

Machine panels and rugged tablets on Windows 10

Some machine panels, kiosks and rugged tablets run Windows 10 LTSC 2021, and the edition decides the date. The Enterprise edition ends on 12 January 2027. The IoT Enterprise edition gets security updates until 13 January 2032, according to the Microsoft lifecycle page for the IoT edition.

Type winver to see which one you have. The other Microsoft dates for 2027 are in end of support in 2027 for factory PCs and servers.

2G and 3G in India: no date, so ask your operator

No Indian operator or the Department of Telecommunications had announced a date to switch off 2G or 3G as of 28 October 2026.

That does not make a 2G device safe for ever.

It means the decision is not yet public, and when it comes, you may get little notice. I would not wait for the announcement to start counting.

So find out which devices in your factory use a SIM. Look at the alarm dialler on the fire panel or the generator, the trackers on your vehicles, card machines, meter modems and gate barriers. For each one, note whether it needs 2G, 3G or 4G. The label, the manual or the supplier will tell you.

For every device that is 2G-only or 3G-only, ask the operator of its SIM in writing how long it will support that network in your circle. Then plan a 4G replacement for when the device next needs service anyway.

Abroad: 2G and 3G switch-offs dated 2027

This part matters if you export.

A tracker or temperature logger inside your shipment has to work in the country of your buyer as well as in yours.

The GSA, the global association of mobile suppliers, counted 303 completed, planned or ongoing 2G and 3G switch-offs in 88 countries and territories in its December 2025 report. The list keeps growing. India has no date yet, but it is not outside the trend.

The 2027 dates below are as reported by IoT module and SIM suppliers in their sunset tables (Teltonika, Wireless Logic and emnify), and by Digital Today for Korea. Operators can move them, so confirm with the operator before you buy anything.

Country Network Reported date
Bulgaria Yettel 3G 31 March 2027
Canada SaskTel 3G 1 October 2027
Netherlands 2G 1 December 2027
Belgium Telenet 2G December 2027 (estimated)
Sweden 2G 31 December 2027
South Africa 2G and 3G (Vodacom, MTN, Telkom) 31 December 2027
South Korea SK Telecom 3G End of 2027, subject to government approval

The same tables report that New Zealand's 3G networks already closed in March 2026.

We export to 20+ countries, and a shipment can easily spend a month between our gate and the warehouse of the buyer. A logger that connects in Jaipur must also connect when the container is opened at the other end.

A replacement checklist for 2027

  1. List every device that has a screen or a SIM: model, operating system and version, network (2G, 3G, 4G or Wi-Fi only), the app it runs, and who supports it.
  2. Mark each line red, amber or green. Red means no security updates now: Android below 7.0, Windows CE, or the Enterprise LTSC edition of Windows 10 after 12 January. Amber means updates end within the next year and a half, or the device needs 2G or 3G. Everything else is green.
  3. Ask your WMS, ERP or app vendor which Android or Windows versions their next release supports. Buy devices to that list, not to the cheapest quote.
  4. Test one new device with your real app, real labels and real Wi-Fi for a week before you order the rest.
  5. For export shipments, specify 4G or LTE-M trackers and loggers in the purchase order (LTE-M is a low-power 4G mode made for such devices), and ask which countries' networks they are approved for.
  6. Budget the red and amber lines in the plan for next financial year. Replacing every handheld in one go hurts. Replacing a few each quarter is easier on the cash.
  7. Wipe old devices and give them to an authorised e-waste recycler.

Most of the foreign dates in this article come from tables published by suppliers, and the operators themselves may change them. I kept them because an early warning is useful, but I would not buy or scrap anything on them alone.

Pick up the oldest handheld in your warehouse today and check its Android version. If it says 6, you already have your answer.

Questions buyers ask

Will our USB barcode scanner stop working in 2027?

No. A plain scanner that plugs into a PC and types the code into it has no operating system or network to expire. The risk sits in handheld computers that run Android or Windows, in the PC software behind them, and in anything with a SIM card.

Is 2G being switched off in India in 2027?

No date had been announced as of 28 October 2026. That is not a promise that 2G will last, so for every 2G-only device, ask the SIM's operator in writing how long it will support that network in your circle, and plan a 4G replacement at the device's next service.
